Siena’s traditions, flavours and artistic heritage cannot fail to captivate its visitors, in an atmosphere that is still entirely medieval. The recently restored Duomo, a superb expression of Romanesque-Gothic architecture, is a marvellous treasure chest of art and the Piazza del Campo, with its characteristic shell shape, is one of the most beautiful squares of the Middle Ages. Among the many events that bring the city to life, the most famous is undoubtedly the Palio, the most famous horse race in Italy, closely linked to the life of the city’s districts and with very ancient origins: the first Palio was held in the 12th century and still today it manages to transform Piazza del Campo with its energy and folklore every summer.
