Val di Bisenzio

Behind a quiet and silent appearance, the Val di Bisenzio hides numerous historical curiosities: small mysteries, legends and historical facts that intertwine, all to be revealed during your stay! It is from here that Garibaldi passed, trying to reach Genoa after the fall of the Roman Republic, and it is here that the writer Curzio Malaparte wanted his tomb, also in this valley passed the Gothic Line during the Second World War. During the Middle Ages, however, the area was part of the lands of the Counts Alberti, who, according to legend, did not open the doors of their fortress to the Supreme Poet, Dante Alighieri, when he asked for refuge during a snowfall. Legend has it that, for this reason, Alighieri placed the two Alberti brothers, who died as fratricides, in the Caina of Hell (the place of punishment for family traitors), also citing the place of his misadventure:

“When I had looked around a little,
I turned to my feet, and saw two so close together,
that their hair on their heads was mixed together.”
[…] “If you want to know who these two are,
the valley from which Bisenzo slopes
was their father Alberto and theirs.
From one body they came out; and all of Caina
you will be able to search, and you will not find a shadow
more worthy of being stuck in gelatin;”

(Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy, Inferno, Canto XXXII, verses 40-42, 55-60)
